With the rapid development of digital technology, people are accustomed to using mobile phones or tablet computers to read books. Will paper books be eliminated by history? This issue is a topic of concern in modern life. However, the study found that although the number of published books has decreased in the past few years, it began to rebound in 2016. After all, human beings are the animals of the senses. The physical books bring real experiences of five senses and can’t be replaced by E-books.
The bookbinding technology has developed quite early. Since the invention of paper, books have developed many appearances, playing a very important role in the history of human development.
Since the industrial revolution, all manufacturing supplies of human life have been almost mechanization and automation, with mechanical aids, a large number of books also can be stapled faster and better, but because of consistent, standardized, it lacks its own characteristics. So we can find that there are still a group of people who are immersed in the world of hand-stitched books. From the selection of visual elements, creative media, to the use of needle-stitching techniques, the book binding is full of possibilities and interest. Each hand-stitched book is unique and it is an elegant, gorgeous binding art whose value is comparable to E books.
This creative study, starting from the discussion of needle stitching techniques, we studied the skills of needle stitching and the visual effects of various types of books, and tried to use composite creations to increase the value of books. After skilled, a series of thematic creations began. Traditional Taiwanese elements were selected as materials, including the elements of Taiwan floral, Taiwanese aboriginal, and Taiwan endangered animals. These three elements contain the important implications of cultural heritage and environmental conservation. In addition to fully displaying the visual effects of the elements, each type of needle stitching method is used to staple books so that each book has a visual expression and the art of binding skills.
