In my bamboo craft career of the past ten more years, my works can be divided into two categories: First, traditional teapot set, made of original one-piece bamboo, is artistic and for a small amount of collectors; Second, everyday life commodity, industrially produced with modernized-form, is made of plybamboo. Both contained a few well-prized masterpieces, which in common were representations of the experience of my life. In the design works in this thesis, I looked for an object that not only represents the experience of my life, but has an abstract geometric shape to distinguish from my former creations. It suddenly showed up “egg", the best representative one, that is eaten daily. It symbolizes the beginning of life and the perfection. Its shape and surface is more vivid than that of the sphere. The "egg-shaped surface" is used as the motif of my creation, and the plybamboo is used to create mass-produced daily necessities. In the process of design, I reviewed many works of the egg shape at home and abroad and caught the geometric principle of the egg shape. Then I drew the outline of the egg shape, and used linear cut or Boolean operation to obtain the component element, which is used to make an egg shape transparent or impervious by rotating 360 degrees on the central axis of an egg. The practical meaning of the creation can be made either forward or afterward. It is through the process of cardboard proofing, wire saw cutting, assembly, nailing, assembly, modification, and etc., two sets of egg-shaped curved tables and chairs, two chandeliers and a dining carton are completed. An exhibition, held at the SeaPort Art Center of Taichung City, gave me an opportunity to interact with audiences, and offered them more about the design and application of plybamboo. The motif of the egg-shaped surface of this topic can be further generated, yet more attentions might be paid to the three points as follows: 1. The design prototype should be modeled with 3D software to mass production in response to direct connection to the production line machine. 2. The way of expression is to be asymmetrical or irregularly stacked to make the work more interesting. 3. Expand the utility imagination of the creation of plybamboo of the egg-shaped surface. |
